This MOOC is about perinatal mental health during the first 1000 days, from pregnancy to the child's second year of life.
This is a key moment for both the parents and the child's development, health, and well-being. Becoming a parent is a significant life event that involves significant physical, hormonal, psychological and social changes. During pregnancy and after the child’s birth, the mental health of future and new parents can be compromised.
Nearly one in five women (20%) and one in 10 men (10%) are said to be affected by perinatal depression. In addition, around 15% of parents present anxiety disorders during this period. Other psychological disorders may appear for the first time or become more pronounced during pregnancy or after the birth of a child, such as bipolar disorders or schizophrenic disorders.
This is why support and guidance for parents and children by perinatal professionals is essential throughout the first 1000 days.
This MOOC is an initiative of the EU-funded PATH project “PerinAtal menTal Health”. Its French segment was coordinated by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health (CCOMS), EPSM Lille-Métropole.
It aims at helping professionals working in perinatal care:
- identify perinatal psychological disorders,
- support parent-baby interactions and child development,
- work in a network, through knowledge of key measures in terms of prevention and care, and peer support in perinatal mental health.
The acronym MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course. It is therefore an accessible university-level course that is freely available on the Internet.
The MOOC is permanently accessible and includes 46 video clips divided into 3 modules and awards a certification.
Other resources developed in France within the framework of the PATH project (the brochure "Mental health during pregnancy and parenthood", the comic book “Becoming a Dad", and podcast "PATH, well-being at work for (future) parents”) will be accessible free of charge in April on the following website: www.epsm-lille-metropole.fr/path
This MOOC is primarily intended for professionals working in healthcare, medical social or social fields, but is open to all; anyone interested in the subject of mental health during pregnancy and the first years of a child's life can register freely for this course.
The content will be published gradually, at a rate of one module every two weeks, starting on 3 April 2023. After the publication of the 3rd and final module, the whole course will be permanently online, with full access for all those who are interested.
Each module consists of the following elements:
- an introduction to the module, written by the scientific and educational
coordinators of the session
- the lessons of the module, consisting of videos, with commented and audio slides, PDFs and additional resources. Each participant is also encouraged to share, in the comment section below each video, any elements he or she deems useful (in relation to the subject covered: publication, study, feedback, etc.)
- quizzes with a series of MCQs on the different courses of the module
- a conclusion covering the lesson and written by the scientific and educational coordinators of the session.
The working time per week (videos + quizzes) is estimated to be about two to three hours.
